HLUHLUWE
Set on a hill a few kilometers off the N2, this small, well organized town derives its name from the nearby river which in turn is named after a thorny monkey rope called Umhluluwe that grows in the area. Hluhluwe produces over 90% of the country's pineapples but it is fast becoming just as well known as its game parks and wildlife. The town itself has a variety of shops , restaurants , a service station , doctors a police station, a library, an auto bank facility and a landing strip. A major game auction run by the private sector is held annually in Hluhluwe which attracts world wide.
Once a year the town's Pineapple Association holds a Pineapple Festival which is a large colorful affair showcasing the fruit and other local products and services. This show also marks the country largest off road quad and motor bike race.
Hluhluwe has a variety of accommodation options including a Hotel, lodges, guest houses, and camping and back packer facilities. There are numerous game drives on offer into the Hluhluwe Game Reserve as well as hikes and visits to ethnic villages where visitors can find anything from weaving to Zulu dancing. Close to town are a large number of private game and nature reserves and False Bay Park, which forms a large a large section of the St. Lucia lake system
